Jace peered out from behind the rocky outcropping and studied the fort. Ten paces to his right and a long way down, the Blue River roared.
Feryka — home — was just across the river. He could see his adopted land from here, but it might as well be on the other side of the world. Even if they could scale the sheer walls of rock looming over the water, the swirling rapids made it far too dangerous to swim.
Eredwyn had confirmed that Sasha was alive and inside the fort, but his sense of the young man was muted and hazy, which meant Sasha was probably drugged.
They’d been watching since late morning. Or at least, Jace had been watching. Eredwyn had quickly become bored, and had curled up in a stony hollow. He’d been snoring softly ever since.
Jace nudged the mythe-weaver gently. “Eredwyn. Time to wake up. I think I know how I can get in there.”
Eredwyn’s eyes fluttered open, and he gave Jace a blank stare. A moment later he frowned. “I feel horrible,” he announced, wincing as he stretched.
“Ai, it was a hard night’s ride, and I imagine we’ll both be feeling quite a bit worse before this is over.” Jace handed him a skin full of tepid water. “I’ve seen a couple of couriers coming and going. I’m going to find some decent cover and intercept the next one in or out of there and get a hold of his uniform.”
Eredwyn wiped his mouth on his sleeve and handed the water skin back to Jace. “And?”
“I was thinking I’d stagger up to the fort and pass out at their feet with tales of bandits on the road,” Jace said. “Unless you’ve a better idea?”
“I fear I do not. There are two mythe-weavers inside the fort besides Sasha. One feels like a healer, but the other… He’s powerful, and if he’s working for the army, it’s probably safe to assume he’s one of the king’s Hunters. Anything more than passive sensing of the mythe risks alerting him. That will hardly aid Sasha.”
“Damn. If they’ve got a healer in there, I won’t be able to fake an internal injury. I’ll need you to hurt me. Make it look like I’ve been beaten.”
Eredwyn gave him a dubious look.
“After I take care of the courier,” Jace clarified. “It has to look convincing.”
“I’m a healer. You’re asking me to hurt you.”
Jace waved away his protest. “It’ll get me in there, and I’ll be free to move around.”
“I’m not sure that I can…” Eredwyn trailed off, looking ill.
“Then we might as well give up any hope of rescuing Sasha,” Jace said flatly, though the thought of leaving Sasha to the mercy of Tallin’s Hunters was enough to turn his stomach. “There is no way the two of us can take on the entire fort. Neither of us is big or strong enough to go head to head with a front-line fighter. What did you think we were going to do? Storm the front gate?”
“Surely
